What Is Carrier Oil?

Carrier oil is used for essential oil dilution so to avoid possible skin reaction. When blended together, it makes the essential oil less potent but does not deteriorate its therapeutic properties. Though I can tell you that I applied many essential oils neat (without carrier oil) onto my skin with no harm, we have different body responses and it is recommended to be on the safe side. If you have kids or babies and would like them to also benefit from essential oils, you may follow the Guide for Diluting Essential Oils For Kids And Babies.

You must keep your carrier oil in a place with cool or normal temperature. Too much heat and some of its chemical compounds will break down which can cause bad odor or taste. Bear in mind that once essential oil is diluted, it follows the expiration date of the carrier oil you used.

Carrier oil is not needed when diffusing essential oils. It is only needed for topical application.

WHAT ARE NOT CARRIER OILS? Vegetable shortening, butter, and margarine are not intended for topical use. As well as mineral oil and other petroleum derivatives like petroleum jelly.
